Sharpstown Blowout proposes a selective voiding of the existing mall and the moat of parking that encircles it, while multiplying the only building type on the site that is currently economically viable—the tower. Breaking down the fortress-like mall and opening up the site with a public park provides the surrounding neighborhoods with a collective space, while also increasing foot traffic into the site. The softened edge of the exploded plan allows for flexible use between parking and public programming such as markets and fairs. Sharpstown Center would go from being the commercial center of a satellite community into one hub within Houston’s greater network of local, urban centers.
